At just six and a half years old, Michael's artistic journey began with sketching. Over the years, his love for art never waned, and today, Michael has been part of the Monte Lupo Arts team for eight years, where his creativity truly flourishes.
At Monte Lupo Arts, Michael works primarily with ceramics, using underglaze paints to bring pots and other creations to life.
Michael emphasises the importance of communication and guidance in his creative process.
"I usually tell my Job Coach when I want to learn new techniques and styles of art," he said. This collaborative approach helps Michael adapt and refine his skills, ensuring that each piece he works on reflects his artistic vision.
When it comes to creating art, Michael's process is a blend of teamwork and individual focus.
"My job coach picks specific work to start with, and I make a range of designs, usually based on what’s popular in the shop," he explains.
Art at Monte Lupo Arts is a collaborative effort, with multiple artists contributing to a single piece.
Michael enjoys being involved in every aspect of decorating, from intricate details to background work.
Once his part is complete, the piece is bisque fired in the kiln, glazed for a shiny finish, and then displayed in the Monte Lupo Gallery Café.
Michael's motivation to create art is unwavering and he demonstrates passion for his work daily.
"I’m always motivated to come back as much as possible," he said.
One of the things Michael is most proud of is creating portraits for his friends and family on their birthdays.
"I add their hobbies in the background, and it makes them feel special," he shared.
These personalised gifts are more than just art; they are expressions of love and care, making them particularly meaningful to him.
Looking to the future, Michael is excited about returning to painting on canvas, a medium he hasn't had the chance to explore recently due to his focus on ceramics and pottery.
"I want to get back to painting on canvas," he said, eager to expand his artistic repertoire and continue creating meaningful work.
When it comes to supporting and advocating for artists with disabilities, Michael emphasises the importance of understanding the tasks at hand.
"Keep us on track, understand what the task is, and help them understand what their priority work is," he advised.
Through his journey, Michael has found a place where his creativity can flourish, and his story is a testament to the power of art as a tool for expression, connection, and growth.
